Rotterdam-based artist Yosra Abbady recently graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy. Her work revolves around collective narratives and the uncovering of cultural archetypes to question our shared reality. In her paintings, she explores themes such as solidarity, the meaning of depicting others, and more. She manages to bridge the gap between the classical and Camp with subtle humor and emotion, always striving to place the essence and autonomy of the depicted person at the center. Many of the scenes take place on the island, an imaginary, shared refuge. Here, she portrays both herself and others in various scenarios to reveal something about the essence of the individual. Sometimes the viewer is actively drawn into an action; at other times, they encounter the aftermath. From the young man who has prepared a funeral for his younger self, to the maenad who has just ripped her reproductive system from her own body. Everything is naviagted together.
